Mike Green - Capital's Best in the NHL

Mike Green was born in Calgary, Alberta Canada on October 12, 1985. He had a humble beginning with both his parents working to provide for Mike, his brother Matt and sister Megan. Mike played mostly summer sports such as soccer, baseball and skate boarding until he was 10. He then finally convinced his parents to allow him to play hockey with his friends. Mike excelled in hockey and at the age of 14, he was considered the best in his age group. At this young age, he was drafted to the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League and he played there for five years until the age of 19. Forever changing his life, he was drafted in the first round (and 29th overall) by the Washington Capitals in 2004.

In 2005-2006, Mike played his first game on his 20th birthday with the Capitals; during that season he averaged approximately 15 minutes per game. He was named to the AHL All-Rookie Team and was the first Capitals prospect to earn that honor. In 2006-2007, Mike played 70 games in his first full NHL season and was tied for fourth in points among defensemen. In the 2007-2008 season, Mike played in 82 games and was one of four Capitals to play in every game. He gained acclaims as the youngest defenseman to lead the NHL in 25 years.

In the 2008-2009 season, Mike finished second in the voting for the Norris Trophy and was the top vote-getter among defensemen in the NHL First All-Star Team. USA voted him the league's top defenseman, and he was named to the Sporting News' All-NHL team by a vote of league coaches and executives. His hockey career is one that dreams are made of, and as he heads into 2010, a ESPN website stated that "Green is the most talented offensive defender in the NHL".
